Last week, we highlighted Mercedes Gleitze , the first British woman to swim across the English Channel. She achieved her goal while wearing the world's first waterproof wristwatch, the Rolex Oyster. Let's dive deeper into the Oyster's marvelous design and its closest descendent,
Today, it's easy to take for granted our ability to wear a watch while showering, swimming or even deep diving. Still, it took much ingenuity to perfect the Oyster case - without it, water, sweat and dust may easily seep into the watch, damaging the movement. In 1926, Rolex engineered an intricate system of cogs that securely protected the timepiece's inner workings inside a small airtight vault. Improving on this invention, in 1954, Rolex conceived of the Twinlock winding crown, a patented design that adds an additional waterproof barrier for protection. These inventions indisputably changed the course of horology.
The Oyster Perpetual highlights Rolex's crowning achievement with an elegant, reliable, waterproof design that invites us to make the world our oyster by striving for excellence on land and in the water. The classic design of these watches is evidence of the enduring genius Rolex unveiled nearly a century ago.
